ADDRESS: 61 North Edgewood Avenue, La Grange, Illinois 60525

SIZE: 2,847 square feet

PROJECT TYPE: Single Family New Construction

HOME DESCRIPTION:

Our concept was to build a LEED certified home on a 30 x 40 footprint. We invested in the shell of the house by reducing air infiltration, increasing the amount of insulation and installing triple pane windows under the premise that the shell of the house is the most expensive and difficult to modify later.  Since our site had good southern exposure, we used passive solar features so that sunny winter day heating needs could be reduced.  Additionally, a portion of our sustainability goals focused on indoor air quality which guided us to use low/no-VOC products, a passive radon system, and an ERV.

Since indoor air quality was critical, we chose Molidor Custom Builders, with whom we’d worked previously and had constructed the first Healthy Home in the area that was entirely chemical free. As our contractors were willing to learn and agreed with our simple green solutions, we felt we were well prepared for our project. One of the major difficulties was sorting though the abundance of products and deciding which provided value and met our sustainability goals.  In the end, the expected benefits and return on investments were greater than the cost to build LEED certified and green.
